I liked reading the book and I think this helped me understand the situation of people in LECD.

The Paper Bag Game. I am excited to play the game. I think it will be hard to earn money and we have not got a strategy that can give us much money. By playing this game I will be learning how and what it is like to make paper bags.

Global issues is a core that makes us all understand people in poor countries and make us want to help them.

Recently a humongous earthquake hit Haiti and now they are in the worst condition. Tens of thousand people were killed, capital and wider areas are devastated and is prompting a major international effort. Plus, there are many human rights being denied to them, under 29 years of brutal ruling, tens of thousand people were again killed. People are plagued by violent confrontation between rival gangs and political groups, called catastrophic. There are people not willing to give each other support and the wealth gap between people is now too big to manage. People are injured and starved, they need education, basic needs and medical care. Hopefully the rest of us are trying our best to get this right. Media is getting involved, they are taking refuges, giving out supplies, saving alive and conscious people, and sending injured people to the hospital. These are not the only problems though, diseases like Diphtheria, can get rid with vaccine but is now killing a lot of people. And diarrhea, because you lose a lot of liquid, you will eventually die too. The Haiti is in a region that faces a lot of storms and is making things harder. The government of Haiti must reach out help to the more developed countries to cope with this disaster as quick as possible.

1.How did you feel when playing the game?


I felt really frustrated. I tried my best to make the life better but the situation kept on getting worse. I was really sorry for them, I tried to give them at least medicine but I ran out of money.



2. Summarize the game.
The family in Haiti are trying to live a better life. The  people are living in poverty, struggling every day to stay healthy, keep out of debt, and get educated



3. Which ‘primary objective’ did you choose, and justify your choice.
I chose money. I actually think that health if the most important thing, but in order to stay healthy, you will need to go to hospital and to get treatments you will need money. Also if you have money, you can pay for education and therefore you can have a much better life.



4. What types of decisions did you have to make about your family members while playing the game and trying to achieve your objective?
I made them work hard on their businesses to make a better profit but they eventually got sick. To prevent them from dying I had to stop them from working and made them rest or go to clinic.



5. What strategies did you use? For example, did you combine work and school, or did you send anyone to school? Which worked? Which did not?
I sent people to the clinic for them to get better and get back to work. This worked because they could again go to work for money. What didn't work was making them rest in the house when they got sick, they never got better, their illness got worse and had to go to clinic eventually. 



6. What obstacles did you face in trying to keep the children in school?
I ran out of money and could not give them anymore educations. Also they got sick and could not continue their study.


7. Why is access to education a huge challenge as LEDC’s try to develop?
Accesses to education is a big challenge for LEDS’s trying to develop because they don’t have enough money. Even keeping themselves healthy is hard for them, they won’t even get a chance to pay for the education.


8. Why is it vital to a country’s development to educate its people – especially women?
It is important for a country to educate its people for development because people will get a better job, a job that can give them much more profit. It is especially important for women because not many women are getting educated in LECD countries. If they get educated also, they can do things that many of us could not do. We don’t know if they can work better than we do. Right now we have to increase the chances for women to learn.


9. Think about where you are from. How does the educational situation compare? Explain the differences.
In my country, South Korea, basically almost all of the people go to school for education. Both girls and boys, they even graduate from the colleges and while they do that, they have enough money to buy food for ourselves, buy a place to live, and stay healthy. There is too much gap between Haiti and my country. It is a very sad thing.

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.

Describe the game. What was the purpose of the game?

The purpose of this game was for us to realize how hard life is for people in the poor countries.

Describe and explain your strategy during the game.

My strategies in game was basically doing the farming with different kinds of crops because it is not safe when you rely on a single type of crop. They might just fail to grow when others don’t . I only raised chickens to get money because that was least likely to be killed. I gave medicine to the family when they got sick. I also refused to give up my land to other people for money, to prevent diseases. I never let the women have babies because that makes me spend more money on them. At last I bought things like getting a relative to keep my money safe from other people.

What is a short- term decision?

Short term decisions are decisions that people make to get food, to pay for the food, or anything like that.

Why are they bad?

This is bad because it stops them from developing; they would only try to survive not develop.

Why could somebody in a situation of poverty get stuck in a cycle of short-term decision-making?

When they are in a situation of poverty, they get no education and low personal incomes.
They have no money, so they will eventually have to worry about getting the food. The only way to escape this is is learn how make a better profit but they obviously don’t get education on this so they get trapped in this cycle of short-term decision-making.

What is a long-term decision?
Long-term decision is a decision made to get good education or vaccines for diseases.

Why are they good?

They are good because they are things that help them to develop.

Why do long-term decisions lead to development and increased standards of living?

They lead to development because they are all about building schools and curing people so they don’t die. People will get good education and they will make developments. People won’t have to die so soon when they get sick so it will bring the population up.

What did you learn from playing this game?

I learned strategies that can lead you to get prosperous, but on the other hand, I learned how people in poor countries suffer to survive and develop. They could not even get medicines when they needed them, it was so hard to get enough money to cure the family.

Which SLR does this experience identify most closely with and why?

Learn Enthusiastically. Our purpose of doing this game was to learn how hard life is in the poor countries and now I know better than before, about these farmers. If I tried not to learn than it must have been hard to notice these kind of facts.

Which MDG’s does this simulation relate to and why?

End hunger and poverty.  People in this game was in a situation of poverty. They needed money for everything! They needed to buy medicines, get educations and many other things to escape the cycle of poverty.

Peace One Day

From watching the video I realized how important it was to have a peace day. Even Taleban agreed on the peace day. We must have Peace Day at least once a year.
Peace is important for the children, they need medical treatments and people will also need to rest from fighting. It is important for people to realize how good it will be when there is peace, so we can determine people to have more peace!
As i said, when there is peace, we can help each other out and we won't have to worry too much about the problems and the country would develope fast by focusing on other things.
Lives are lost, people lose family, the buildings collaspe, all bad kinds of things happen when there is a war.

Global Issuses Project

 
  Today is Sept. 21st, the Peace Day. Since we are the Global Issues, we decided to do a classroom project on Peace Day. Last week, we had an assembly to promote peace, we did dancing, gave speech, and many other things. Today we baked cookies and sold them, made people do the commitment on Peace One Day website, do face painting, filmed ourselves, took pictures based on peace, and made donations.

In the assembly, we had no mistakes on giving speeches and were able to clearly explain why Peace was important. We also made them remember Peace Day well by dancing. We couldn't cooperate well when we had to face down but it was alright. Sometimes, I could see people dancing wrong, but it went okay since we didn't have enough time to practice. People listened carefully to our speech and enjoyed our dance. They took the Peace Day seriously and I could tell that when we were having 1 minute of silence. Our whole point was to make people know about the Peace Day and people became aware of it. I'm happy with our assembly.

 Our skills today, were amazing, we all worked together and made a project that could entertain others. We actually made them do this thing! ( some we forced them to do it ).  Therefore, people's response to our project was very good. When they were in our class I could hear all laughter and chats going on. I was supposed to do the face painting and force people to make commitment on the Peace One Day website. People came to me and ordered(?) me to draw peace sign on their faces, then I made people who did the face painting, make the commitment.The atmosphere was perfect, it was like they were enjoying this Peace Day themselves. The most important thing was that they now know when the Peace Day is, know the importance of it, and know how to celebrate it. We had no problems with this project and I wish we can do it again next year.

By selling the cookies, we made 611RM profit (which is $185) in 40 minutes!!! With this money we will buy the T-shirts for the Cambodia marathon team( teachers). They will run for the aids victims and landmine victims. I feel good to help the marathon team. I was surprised how much money we could make but in the other hand, I was disappointed that we had over half of the cookies were left.

What are Global Issues, and why are they important to me?

Global issues are problems that the countries are struggling with. Global issuses such as, global warming, hunger, universal educations needs to be solved. UN set up 8 millennium goals and they are end poverty and hunger, universal education, gender equality, child health, maternal health, combat HIV/AIDs, environmental sustainability, global partnership. The UN said by 2015, all these problems will be fixed. They are important to me because these things can harm myself and because we are responsible for helping others as their neighbors. If the environment goes bad, the air and all other things would also all go bad. The envirnment is where you live and we need to protect it. We will have to have a better global partnership and we can help each other out much more quickly and afficently,  this is because so many people are dying because of hunger and HIV/AIDs and we can't just sit here and watch them. Children are our future, we need to keep them healthy and give them better education. The global issues are very important to all of us, we will have to help each other out when they are having problems.
